"I grew up near the middle of Birmingham, but thanks to my fisherman Dad I learned to love the countryside and wildlife while still very young.
My later work-life was in bird conservation and then with rivers, which was where I really learned about the terrible impacts of modern intensive farming on people and wildlife. I also learned how good and beneficial farming can be, when practised with regard to nature and human nutritional needs.
So I decided I would have a go myself, and farm the way I thought it should be done. I also knew that direct sales to customers was more likely to work economically for a small scale business, which is why I started The Real Thing.
It’s been hard work but I’m enjoying the new challenge and the creativity, and I’m loving seeing the bird life thrive on the land that I’m stewarding with the animals."

"Through spending the summer holidays on my grandparents mixed farm in East Lothian growing up, the fond memories of feeding sheep with my grandfather peaked my interest with the natural world.
After a Master’s degree in Tropical Animal Production and Health at Edinburgh University, I spent over 20 years working on food security issues in Africa with the UN and the British Government.
I support The Real Thing with a range of activities, from livestock handling, seeking out grants and IT. I also do the daily cooking of our own meat, to make sure we truly walk our talk and nourish ourselves as well as others with superb quality, locally raised produce."
